What Are Veneers?
A healthy smile can be tarnished by minor cosmetic flaws like teeth that are stained, chipped, cracked or which have unsightly gaps between them. Veneers are often used for these types of imperfections to improve the appearance of a smile. Veneers are wafer-thin shells made of porcelain used to restore the natural look of teeth, while also providing strength and durability that's comparable to natural tooth enamel. Veneers are custom made to match the color, size, contour, and texture of your natural teeth, to ensure they naturally blend into your smile.
Veneers can be used to address several cosmetic issues including:
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Unwanted or uneven spaces between teeth
- Stained or discolored teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Teeth that are too large or too small
Our Pleasanton Veneer Procedure
The typical process for receiving veneers requires two visits to our Pleasanton dentist office with little or no anesthesia necessary during the procedure. The teeth are prepared for the veneers by shaping their surfaces to allow for the thickness of the veneers. A mold or impression is taken of the teeth to send to a lab to prepare the veneers. You and your Pleasanton cosmetic dentist will choose a shade or color that best matches the rest of your teeth.
During your second visit, your dentist will prepare the tooth surfaces by cleaning them and etching the surfaces to ensure the veneers will adhere to the teeth. Then a special adhesive is used to attach the veneers to the surfaces of the teeth. A special ultraviolet light is then used to harden the bond.
Caring for Your New Veneers
To care for your veneers, continue doing a good job of brushing and flossing your teeth. We recommend using a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste. You should also make sure to visit our office regularly for routine checkups. During these visits, your dentist will inspect your veneers for any signs of potential failure.
If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, you should ask us about providing you with a night time bite guard so you don't damage your veneers. Even with proper care, your veneers will need to be replaced in a few years. Just do a great job of cleaning your teeth and visiting us for routine checkups so they'll last as long as possible.
