What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth-colored plastic resin material is applied to a tooth and hardened with a special light to improve the tooth's appearance. Dental bonding can be used to:

  • Repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • Improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • Fill a minimally decayed tooth
  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Change the shape of a tooth
  • Protect a portion of a tooth root that has been exposed due to gum recession

Dental bonding is one of the easiest and least expensive services offered by cosmetic dentists. Unlike veneers and crowns which typically are made in an off-site dental lab, dental bonding can usually be done by our Pleasanton dentists in one convenient office visit, unless you're having several teeth treated. It does not require the use of anesthesia unless our dentists need to treat a decayed tooth to prevent it from spreading to other teeth.

Our Pleasanton, TX Dental Bonding Procedure

When you come in for your appointment, our cosmetic dentists will select the most appropriate color of the resin material that best matches the natural color of your teeth. The tooth surface will be slightly etched by our dentists to roughen it. Then, the tooth is lightly coated with a conditioning liquid that helps the bonding material adhere. Once the tooth is prepared, our dentists will apply the tooth-colored resin, taking the time to mold and smooth it properly until it's the proper shape. The material is hardened using a special ultraviolet light that our dentists will trim, shape, and polish until it matches the sheen of the rest of the tooth surface. The entire procedure usually takes under one hour to complete. If you are having more than one tooth treated, we may ask that you schedule additional appointments.

Maintaining Your Dental Bonding

With daily brushing and flossing, your bonded teeth can last for up to 10 years before they will need to be treated again. We recommend that you avoid eating hard foods as this can crack the composite material. Other habits to avoid are fingernail biting, chewing on ice or pencils, and using your teeth as a tool to open items. This can not only severely damage your bonded teeth but also, your natural teeth in the process.
